iSEC researchers Don Bailey and Mat Solnik claim to be able to hack their way into a securely locked car because its alarm relies on a cell phone or satellite network that can receive commands via text messaging. Devices connecting via a cellular or satellite network are assigned the equivalent of a phone number or Web address. If hackers can figure out the number or address for a particular car, they could use a PC to send commands via text messages that instruct the car to disarm, unlock and start.

One of the reasons this text-messaging approach is disconcerting is that text messages aren’t so easy to block, unless you don’t want to receive any texts (either to your car or phone). Google Voice, iBlacklist and a few others (including wireless carriers AT&T and Verizon) do offer some tools for filtering unwanted text messages.

Did you know that over half of data targeted for breaches is medical data?  As detailed in Experian’s blog, ”…the total national economic impact of medical identity theft crimes is more than $30 billion.”

On April 21st, Lynn Goodendorf, CIPP, CISSP, Owner and CEO of Good Security Consulting LLC presented an update on data breaches to our chapter.  Here is one item that captured my attention:

True story:  The North Bronx Healthcare Network had unencrypted back-up tapes stolen from their unlocked & unattended company van on December 23, 2010 affecting approximately 1.7 million people.  It is amazing to me that with all of the advancements in technology (and legislation) that we make, that companies are still transporting unencrypted sensitive information!!!

“The New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC) on February 9, 2011 began to notify 1.7 million patients, staff, contractors, vendors and others who were treated by and/or provided services during the past twenty years for or at Jacobi Medical Center, North Central Bronx Hospital, or their offsite clinics, which comprise the North Bronx Healthcare Network. The notification is about a recent reported theft of electronic record files that contained their personal information, protected health information (PHI), or personally identifiable employee medical information (PIEMI).”
